Typically an Irish Coffee is made with a few simple ingredients: coffee, whiskey, brown sugar, and whipped cream. I love this spin on the traditional Irish Coffee where the brown sugar is replaced with caramel sauce, the whipped cream is replaced with ice cream, and a little kosher salt is added on top. It’s an Irish Coffee variation you can’t miss!

Whether you are looking for a great dessert at the end of a long day or you are looking for a nice little pick me up treat on a weekend morning, this Salted Caramel Irish Coffee is going to be the answer to all your problems.

Salted Caramel Irish Coffee Ingredients

Here are the simple ingredients that make up this coffee cocktail. Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full list of ingredients and their measurements.

  • Strong coffee: Use your favorite dark roast or brew espresso for an extra kick. The coffee’s strong flavor balances the sweetness of the caramel and complements the whiskey’s warmth. You can also use decaf if you want to avoid caffeine.
  • Caramel sauce: Use high-quality or homemade caramel sauce for the best flavor. A salted caramel version adds a delightful savory note that enhances the drink’s complexity.
  • Irish whiskey: The smooth, slightly sweet notes of Irish whiskey pair beautifully with the coffee and caramel, giving this drink its signature warmth and boozy kick. Jameson is a classic choice, but any good Irish whiskey works well.
  • Vanilla ice cream: A dollop of creamy vanilla ice cream melts into the hot coffee, creating a luxurious texture and mellowing the drink’s intensity.

How to Make Salted Caramel Irish Coffee

Here is a brief overview of how this salted caramel coffee comes together. Be sure to scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full recipe including all ingredients and their measurements.

  1. Start with your favorite brewed coffee. This recipe makes two good sized mugs full. There special Irish Coffee Mugs you can buy, but I find that this recipe tastes great no matter what you drink it out of.
  2. Add the caramel sauce. Stir in a tablespoon or so of caramel sauce. You can find several kinds in the ice cream topping section of your grocery store.
  3. Add the whiskey and ice cream. Stir in the Irish Whiskey and top with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. The ice cream settles in nicely over the hot Irish coffee, resulting in the most divine frothy cream topping.
  4. Garnish and enjoy! For garnish, drizzle with more caramel sauce and a sprinkling of kosher salt. Enjoy!
