Baby potatoes tossed in butter, salt, and pepper, are one of our favorite side dishes. We eat it all the time, especially when we are eating one of our favorite dinners, easy top round roast.

Ingredients for Grilled Potatoes Recipe
Made with just a handful of simple ingredients, this grill side dish will quickly become a family favorite. For the full list of ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Yellow baby potatoes: These adorable little bites of potatoes don’t need to be peeled before grilling. They are soft and buttery, and work perfectly in this recipe. Thoroughly wash them to remove any dirt and cut them in half to speed up the cooking time. Read more on what potatoes work best for grilling below.
- Olive oil
- Garlic cloves: Adds the perfect amount of savory flavor to the potatoes.
- Salt and pepper: Simple seasonings for a simple recipe. If you are using table salt, start with half the amount in the recipe card.
The Best Potatoes For Grilling
I recommend using yellow baby potatoes because they are the perfect size and will taste delicious. If you want to use baby red potatoes, those would work just fine.
If you want to use russet potatoes or yukon gold potatoes, I recommend peeling them first. Cut them down so they are 1 1/2 inch cubes.
How to Grill Potatoes
This grilled potatoes recipe is so easy and will take your summer cookouts to the next level. This is a brief overview of how this recipe comes together. For the full recipe card and all of the ingredients, scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Combine the ingredients. While the grill is preheating, toss the potatoes, oil, and seasonings together in a large bowl.
- Wrap the mixture in foil. Pour the potato mixture onto a large piece of foil. Pull the edges of the foil to the middle and pinch the ends to make a foil packet.
- Cook the potatoes. Grill for approximately 30 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender, checking them halfway through.
- Garnish and serve. Top with Parmesan and parsley and serve hot!
How to Serve Grilling Potatoes
These grilled potatoes in foil should be served while they are fresh and hot off the grill. I find it easier to serve by putting them in a bowl like the photo below. Garnish with fresh parsley and Parmesan cheese if desired.
Storing Leftovers
Store any leftover grilling potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. To reheat, put the desired amount in the microwave or in a skillet on low heat. Always use your best discretion with leftovers.
Making Grilled Potatoes Ahead
If you are hosting a barbeque and want to prepare things ahead of time, you can get a headstart on these potatoes for the grill earlier in the day. Combine the ingredients in a large bowl, and then wrap in foil and put in the fridge. When the grill is hot and you are ready to cook everything, pick up this recipe at Step 4. I recommend not starting this recipe until the day you are going to grill the potatoes, and since it is such a quick recipe it won’t add too much stress to the host that day.
Making in the Oven
If this recipe looks delicious to you, but you don’t own a grill, you can make these in the oven. My Oven Roasted Baby Potatoes is one of my favorite side dish recipes and is almost identical to this one. You can also make these in the instant pot: Instant Pot Baby Potatoes.

So, um, we just bought a 60″…and I’ve wanted one that big (or bigger) since we bought the 47″ a few years ago. Mel was the one that said 47″ was big enough…until recently he conceded. But now that it’s here…it’s make-you-sick big. But I LOVE IT. Like these potatoes!

I am totally with you about guys and the huge tvs! My husband is exactly the same way! And he’s always talking about “super HD” or “ultra HD” or whatever. I swear, they all look the same. I read something once about women’s eyesight being twice as good as men’s, so maybe they really can see a difference since their eyesight is worse than ours. But yeah–after 15 years of marriage I finally gave in and allowed my husband to buy a tv for our bedroom and mount it on the wall across from our bed. It is 55 inches. He wants a 70 inch for the living room. And then he wants to take pictures and brag to his brothers about it. Half the time, I think it’s a contest between men to see who has the biggest tv!
Lisa Longley says
OMG!! 55 inches in the bedroom??? That is insane! (And sounds super wrong . . . ) I’m so happy I’m not the only one struggling with this!
Julie @ Julie's Eats & Treats says
YES!!! Like what is with it? It does not need to cover the entire wall for you to see it! Totally agree on this TV thing. Just like I totally agree with these awesomeness of these potatoes!
Lisa Longley says
Right??? Thank you!
