This Dark and Stormy Drink Recipe is going to quickly become a favorite. Like a Moscow Mule made with rum, this Dark and Stormy Drink will be something you want to sip on all the time.
Amazing! Best drink ever!
This Dark and Stormy cocktail is crisp, refreshing, and made with just three ingredients! Did you know that the Dark and Stormy Drink Recipe is the national drink of Bermuda? I mean, if that alone doesn’t make you want one, I don’t know what will.
If you are a Moscow Mule lover like me, you will fall in love with this cocktail. It is just like a Moscow Mule, but made with dark rum instead of vodka. With the flavors of lime and ginger beer working so well together, you are sure to fall in love with this cocktail.
How to Make a Dark and Stormy Cocktail
Given the carbonation in the ginger beer of this recipe, this is a drink that you don’t want to make in a cocktail shaker. Instead, I like to combine all the ingredients in a tall glass filled with ice and give it a gentle stir to combine. For the full recipe including all measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Combine all the ingredients. Pour everything into two tall glasses filled with ice.
- Stir gently to combine.
- Garnish and enjoy! Add a lime wedge (or two) on the rim and enjoy.
Best Rum For a Dark and Stormy
The name Dark and Stormy comes from the black rum that is used in this recipe. Unlike other cocktails that call for a white rum like my Watermelon Rum Punch or Mojito, this cocktail needs a nice dark rum.
While you can use spiced rum, it will change the taste of this cocktail dramatically. You want to look for something labeled “black rum.” Keep in mind that while all black rum is dark rums, not all dark rums are black rums.
Whatever brand you buy, just make sure that it is one that you love. That is the best way to ensure this Dark and Stormy Drink Recipe comes out perfectly.
Ginger Beer
When making a Moscow Mule, one of the quintessential ingredients is the ginger beer. While most ginger beer does not contain alcohol, some does. Deciding whether or not to use a ginger beer with alcohol is completely up to you. If you decide to make a boozier cocktail with alcoholic ginger beer, I love using Crabbies. It doesn’t taste overly boozy, but has a nice ginger taste to it.
You could also make a spin on this Dark and Stormy Recipe using ginger ale! This will result in a sweeter and less boozy drink.
Other Moscow Mule Variations
- My Frozen Moscow Mule recipe never disappoints, and they are way too easy to make.
- You can swap out the vodka for gin too! I love my Moscow Mule with Gin.
- I even swapped out the vodka for tequila and made a Margarita Moscow Mule!
