This Piña Colada Smoothie combines tasty tropical flavors into an easy and creamy breakfast. Just three simple ingredients for this delicious snack.
The other day we picked up one of my kid’s friends to go on an outing and immediately she started telling us in detail about the amazing smoothie she made herself for lunch. I absolutely adore this kid. Honestly, I should have taken notes because it sounded like one incredible smoothie.
This is one of the things I truly love about smoothies. They are the perfect snack – or meal depending on what you put in it – for kids. They give off the vibes of a delicious frozen treat, but you can pack them full of nutritious ingredients.
The same can be said for this fantastic piña colada smoothie recipe. If you love piña coladas, this is the perfect mid-afternoon pick-me-up. It comes together so easily with just three ingredients, has the best creamy texture, and is absolutely delightful.
Piña Colada Smoothie Ingredients
With just three ingredients, this pineapple coconut smoothie couldn’t be easier. Here is what you need to make a pineapple piña colada smoothie. Be sure to see the full list of ingredients and their measurements at the bottom of the post in the recipe card.
- Frozen pineapple: Adds a refreshing pineapple taste and thickens the smoothie without diluting the smoothie with ice. Frozen pineapple chunks are easy to keep on hand and make it easy to whip up this delicious smoothie when fresh pineapple isn’t in season or available. If you have fresh pineapple on hand, simply cut it into chunks and freeze them.
- Banana: Adds to the creaminess and sweetness of the smoothie. The more ripe the banana, the sweeter the smoothie will be and the less of a banana taste it will have. It’s a good way to use them up and its softness will blend well. To make your smoothie thicker, use a frozen banana. Keeping frozen bananas in your freezer is a great idea if you are making smoothies regularly. I share more on this below.
- Coconut milk: Brings the coconut flavor that you know and love in a piña colada and since it is a liquid, helps to thin out the smoothie for drinking. I also love that it helps keep this recipe dairy-free. Read more on what you are looking for below.

- Combine all ingredients. Add everything to a blender. I share a recommendation for a great blender below.
- Blend until smooth. If the smoothie appears too thick, add a bit more coconut milk or a splash of water.
- Serve and enjoy! Pour into a glass for serving. Top with coconut flakes or shredded coconut and a fresh pineapple wedge for extra tropical flair.

Coconut Milk
When purchasing this ingredient, you want to look for coconut milk and not coconut cream. Coconut cream has some added sweetness that we don’t really need or want in this smoothie. I love buying the Thai Kitchen brand of coconut milk because it is reliably delicious and easy to find in most grocery stores in the international aisle.
Freezing Bananas For Smoothies
Have you ever tried to peel a frozen banana? It is no easy task. If you like to use frozen bananas in your smoothies often, I recommend peeling them (and for this smoothie, slicing them in half). Place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper and freeze until they are solid. Then transfer the frozen banana pieces to a freezer-safe bag to keep in your freezer. This hack makes it easy to grab how much you need when you make a smoothie.
Making a Protein Smoothie
A great way to boost protein in this pineapple and banana smoothie is to add a scoop of protein powder. Using an unflavored protein powder makes this smoothie more filling without affecting the taste.
