Ranch Water is the perfect low calorie tequila cocktail! Absolutely refreshing, you will love this great drink at the end of a hot day.
If you are looking for a refreshing cocktail, look no further. Made with a few simple ingredients, Ranch Water is rumored to originate on the ranches of Texas as a way to extend the life of a margarita. This delicious drink isn’t too sweet, but it is absolutely thirst-quenching and perfect after being out in the sun.
What is Ranch Water?
Ranch Water is a tequila highball cocktail made with lime juice and sparkling water. Yep, just three ingredients result in a light and refreshing cocktail perfect to quench your thirst! Here is a bit more about Ranch Water ingredients:
- Tequila: Read more on my tequila recommendation below.
- Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed is always best when it comes to lime juice and cocktails. That being said, I have used bottled in a pinch and still loved my drink. You will also want limes for garnishing your cocktail.
- Topo Chico water: This sparkling mineral water is preferred, but you could also use another sparkling water.
Best Tequila For Ranch Water
The most important thing to remember when buying tequila is to look for a bottle labeled “100% de agave.” Agave is what tequila is made from, so this ensures that your tequila is actually all tequila and not supplemented with lower-quality alcohol.
We are using tequila in a mixed drink here and not drinking it straight, so we don’t need a top-shelf bottle, however, the taste of the tequila is still pronounced so you want to use something that you like. Milagro Silver is my recommendation for a good mid-level tequila that is 100% agave. Sauza is a great budget-friendly option for this drink. If you are looking to splurge, I love Patron.
How to Make Ranch Water
The refreshing Topo Chico Ranch Water drink comes together in a glass in a few simple steps. For the full recipe including all measurements, please scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Pour the tequila and lime juice into a glass filled with ice. Stir to combine.
- Top with Topo Chico. Garnish with a lime wedge.
Topo Chico
One of the things that makes this cocktail authentic is the use of Topo Chico. Topo Chico is the mineral water that is called for in this great drink. Many argue that it is more flavorful than other mineral waters and has the addition of several minerals that give it almost a faint salty taste.
You should be able to find it in most grocery stores. If you are unable to find this brand, I suggest still picking up a bottle of mineral water to make this fantastic cocktail.

Make a Pitcher
To make this Ranch Water cocktail into a pitcher of eight drinks, use the following measurements. You can either mix the Topo Chico in right away if you will be serving soon, or you can set it out and let guests top off their own cocktails with sparkling water.
- 3 cups tequila (24 ounces)
- 1 1/2 cups of lime juice (12 ounces)
- 1-2 cups Topo Chico water (8-16 ounces)

It’s explained in the post, but I’m happy to answer here as well. It’s a specific brand of mineral water that it is more flavorful than other mineral waters and has the addition of several minerals that give it almost a faint salty taste. There is a link to purchase it off Amazon in the post, as well as photos of it so that you can see what you are looking for.
