These Crock Pot Sweet Potatoes are the easiest way to make baked sweet potatoes in the crockpot. Grab your slow cooker and make this sweet potato recipe immediately. You’ll never make them another way again!
Sweet Potatoes are one of my favorite side dishes. They are nutritious, being a great source of both vitamins and fiber. Beyond that, though, they are just delicious. While I love them as a side dish, they are also great as a base that can be topped with so many other delicious ingredients. You can find a full list of suggestions at the bottom of the post.
Though making sweet potatoes in the oven is perfectly easy, I love using my slow cooker as it frees up oven space for other things or for the times I just don’t want to turn on the whole oven for a few potatoes. This is a quick way to prep potatoes.
They come out perfectly! Not stringy and cooked evenly all the way through.

Picking Out and Storing Sweet Potatoes
Here are a few things to keep in mind for all of your sweet potato recipes when buying sweet potatoes and storing them.
- Smooth skin: Look for sweet potatoes that have smooth skin and no blemishes or soft spots.
- Medium-sized: Choose sweet potatoes that are medium-sized and similar in size. This will help ensure that their thickest parts will cook consistently and they will be done at the same time.
- Store them in a cool dark place: Do not store your sweet potatoes in the refrigerator and avoid keeping them in a place that collects moisture.
- Don’t buy them more than two weeks in advance: Sweet potatoes can be stored for two to three weeks in your pantry.
How Long to Cook Sweet Potatoes in the Slow Cooker
One thing to keep in mind when cooking sweet potatoes is that their size will affect the time. Bigger sweet potatoes will take longer to cook.
- Three to four hours on high.
- Six to eight hours on low.
- It may take longer for large sweet potatoes.
How to Know When Your Potatoes Are Done
When you take them out of your crockpot, your sweet potatoes should be fork-tender. If you aren’t able to easily pierce the sweet potato through the center all the way down with a fork, they should go back in the slow cooker for another half hour to an hour.
The sweet potatoes you see in the photos were on the small side of medium and they cooked perfectly in three and a half hours.
Sweet Potatoes Toppings
Once your sweet potatoes are cooked, they are good with so many different toppings. You can enjoy them as a side or even turn them into a healthy meal!
- Filling and healthy, top your sweet potato with your favorite taco meat and toppings like in my Taco Stuffed Sweet Potatoes.
- Skip the bun and put Homemade Sloppy Joes meat on your potato.
- Make it sweet: butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, and cinnamon.
- Make it savory: Sour cream (or plain Greek yogurt), green onions, and chives.

Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Enjoy your cooked sweet potatoes all week! Once they are fully cooked, allow them to cool and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Reheat them in the microwave (be sure to take the foil off) or in the oven until heated through.

Do you add water to the crock pot?
Lisa Longley says
Nope, I don’t add any water.
Trudy says
I’ve made these many times, sometimes just because I know my main dish will be labor intensive. Just a dash of salt and some butter is all they really need, but I serve them with.maple syrup and brown sugar for those with a bit of a sweet tooth.
Lisa Longley says
Right? They are so so good and so simple.
Moose says
Why not just cook in the microwave fir 10 minutes then brush with oil and a bit of salt. Cook in the oven 200c for 25 minutes. Cooks perfect.
For normal potato cook in the oven for 30 – 40 mins dependant on size.
Microwave cooks the potato oven gives you a crispy skin
Lisa Longley says
I’ve cooked them in the microwave . . . honestly, I like them better in the crock pot. I feel like they end up more tender. And I don’t eat the skin, so the crispiness isn’t really an incentive. But to each their own! The microwave is for sure faster.

Lisa Longley says
OMG. You are a genius!
Linda C Richardson says
It does not burn the pot?
Lisa Longley says
Nope, not at all. And if you wrap them well, you have minimal clean up.
Sarah says
No need to poke holes in the potatoes first?
Lisa Longley says
Nope! I love how simple the prep on this is!

Lisa Longley says
So happy you liked them Cheryl!
Helen says
Hi, I am wondering if I need to wrap them in aluminum foil? I have been trying to avoid using it.
Lisa Longley says
If you don’t wrap them in foil they will likely dry out. So if you want to cook them not in foil, I would suggest putting a bit of water in the bottom of the slow cooker.
