My family absolutely adores French Toast. We often have it for dinner (or “brinner” if you are in my house). This eggnog twist on French toast is perfect for eating around the holidays. Everyone in your house will love it.
How to Make Eggnog French Toast
Here is a brief overview of how this easy French toast recipe comes together. For the full recipe including all measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Toast the bread. You can leave it out overnight or toast it in the oven. Read more on this below.
- Make the batter. Whisk together the eggs, eggnog, sugar, vanilla, rum extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Dip the bread slices. One at a time, dip the bread into the batter, turning them several times to ensure they soak up a lot of the batter.
- Cook the French toast. Cook the toast in a skillet in batches for two to three minutes on each side. When you are done, transfer them to a covered baking dish in the warm oven.
Homemade Eggnog
Make a batch to enjoy and then use the leftovers to make this French toast the next morning! Of course store-bought eggnog will work just as well, but there is something so delicious about my homemade recipe. You can also use it to make some eggnog muffins! We always have a batch on hand while we open presents Christmas morning.
Eggnog
Dried Bread For French Toast
Using toasted or slightly dried bread is key to making perfect eggnog French toast. It absorbs just the right amount of the custard while still maintaining its structure. This ensures that your French toast is rich and creamy on the inside with a beautifully crisp and golden exterior.
You can leave your bread out on a baking sheet on the counter overnight, or you can lightly toast it in the oven for a few minutes to get the same effect.
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Store any leftover French toast in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat pieces in the toaster, oven, or air fryer.
French toast also freezes really well. To freeze it, place it in a single layer on a wax paper lined tray and freeze for several hours. Then transfer to an airtight container and freeze for three months. When ready to eat, reheat just as you would with refrigerated French toast.

Nothing should hang on to the fork as it goes through.6 large eggs, 1 cup eggnog, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Dip the toasted bread slices one at a time, turning them several times to ensure they soak up a lot of the batter. I like to push them down in the batter once on each side to fully submerge them. The pieces of bread do not need to sit in the batter to soak.10 pieces thick bread
- Heat a skillet over medium heat. Spray lightly with cooking spray. Cook the toast in batches for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. When you are done, tranfer them to a covered baking dish in the warm oven.
