How to Make Hand Pies
Hand Pies are just that: a pie you can hold in your hand! They’re so much fun to make and eat and you can dress them up a million different ways. Here’s all you do:
- First, unroll both of your pie crusts and cut about 10 three-inch rounds out of each crust. You’ll end up with about 20 rounds, for 10 hand pies.
- Next, melt your peanut butter in the microwave for just a few seconds until it’s soft.
- Then, mix it with some fudgy chocolate frosting (I use the canned stuff for this recipe and it’s delicious!) along with some powdered sugar.
- Spread about a tablespoon of the chocolate peanut butter mixture to the center of ten of the rounds. Then top with the other ten.
- Press down with a fork on the edges to seal them up. Flip them over and repeat.
- Brush each pie lightly with some egg whites. This will ensure your pies get that golden, shiny crust.
- Bake them at 425 degrees for about 8-10 minutes until they’re golden brown.
- Once your pies are out of the oven, drizzle some melted chocolate chips over the top, then let them cool for about ten minutes before serving. YUM!
How to Keep Hand Pies from Getting Soggy
If you’re worried about all that luscious filling seeping out during baking, here’s a tip: chill or freeze the pies for about 20 minutes before you bake them. And make sure to bake them in a really hot oven, at least 425 degrees for these Fudgy Peanut Butter Hand Pies.

Oh your mother is a wise, wise woman. I admit, I have done that while my kids were young and unaware of the concept of time. I can still get away with it with my son because he avoids looking at clocks no matter what. My my 9 year old would be totally onto me. I love the fudgy filling Lisa! It would be hard to only eat of one these!
Lisa Longley says
She was super wise. And sneaky. And I love this recipe, but I must admit that the filling rarely makes it into all of the pies :)
Julie @ Julie's Eats & Treats says
Ohhh both getting time outs. Best Mom advice ever! I’m going to tuck that one away! Then of course I’d have to spoil them with these cute pies!

Dual time outs is maybe the greatest thing ever. :)

Great recipe! Cute story. I think your mother and I went to the same parenting school.
BTW, is there a way to Pin your recipe to Pinterest? I’d really like to keep it, but I couldn’t find the “Pin” button.
Thanks much for the story and the recipe.
Lisa Longley says
Thanks so much for reading Cynthia! I just added a pin-it button, so it should work now. Thanks so much for bringing that to my attention!
Cynthia says
Thanks so much for adding the “Pin” button. I’ve found it so much easier to put everything I like in one place and Pinterest is excellent for that. And thanks for sharing the recipe. I’m going to the store tomorrow for pie crusts! I’ll let you know how they turn out!
Lisa Longley says
I agree Cynthia! I love Pinterest :) I just switched to WordPress, so everything is being put back together slooooowly :)

I love the look of these. I just had a leftover pie crust from my chicken pot pie. But then I made another chicken pot pie. Next time.
And, I have 3 younger brothers – 3, 8, & 10 years younger than me. We did a lot of fighting, too, but now we’re besties.

Thanks Melissa!

In a way, I’m glad I only had one. I’d have NO CLUE how to deal with siblings. Just having play dates with them make my head hurt from all the squabbling. ;)
These are simply amazing. Genius material, really!
Lisa Longley says
Sometimes when I only have one kid with me, I wonder what I ever complained about when I just had one. And then of course the one I’m with complains that I’m not fun enough and asks when their sibling/father is going to be home. And then I remember that, for me, just one was ten million times harder. I guess there are pros and cons to both :)

Oh no, these look like something I would NOT be able to have in my house – I would gain about 10 pounds and eat the whole batch. Yup, no self control when it comes to peanut butter hand pies for certain.
Your Mom sounds like a pretty awesome woman! Love the story! :)
Lisa Longley says
I beg to differ. The whole batch would probably only gain you one pound :)
