Sliders are my favorite easy recipe ever. They are layer upon layer of deliciousness. They take minutes to make, but can feed a dozen people. And the flavor possibilities are endless.

Ham and Cheese Sliders are a classic. Made on Hawaiian rolls and with the best sauce on top, these are going to be a huge hit no matter who you serve them to.

Reader Review

These were a huge hit when I brought them to the party. Not only are the flavors delicious together but it’s a breeze to make!

How to Make Ham and Cheese Sliders

This is a brief overview of how to make these delicious hot ham and cheese sliders. For the full recipe with all of the measurements, please see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  1. Cut the Hawaiian rolls in half. I like to use a large serrated knife for this and place one hand on top of the rolls while cutting with the other hand.
  2. Add the filling. Layer the bottom half of the rolls with half the ham, all of the cheese, and then the rest of the ham.
  3. Add the top half of the rolls.
  4. Pour the sauce over the top of the rolls. Cover the baking dish with foil and then bake.

Ham and Cheese Slider Sauce

One of the best parts of this recipe is the sauce that you pour over the top. It brings so much flavor to these and takes them from a sandwich to a recipe that you will make for parties over and over.

The combination of butter, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, poppy seeds, and dried minced onions is perfection. If you are making this recipe ahead of time, you will want to wait until right before baking make and pour on the sauce.

How to Bake Sliders

These need to bake long enough so that the cheese melts throughout the whole pan of sliders. However, if you bake them too long the top will burn.

It is important that for the first 15 minutes of the baking time they are covered with foil. In the last 10 minutes of baking, the foil comes off and it allows the tops of the sliders to crisp up in the best way.

Substitutions and Variations

I think that the flavors in this sauce work great with ham and Swiss cheese, but you could definitely use other meats and cheeses as well.

  • Turkey and Colby Jack
  • Salami and Provolone

Rolls for Sliders

These Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders are made with Hawaiian rolls. The subtle sweetness of the rolls pairs perfectly with the rest of the ingredients in this recipe. That being said, you can definitely use plain rolls with this recipe and it will be delicious. Additionally, my dinner roll recipe is a great to use if you want to make your own rolls.

Dinner Rolls For Sliders

Dinner Rolls that come together in about an hour are basically magic. These homemade dinner rolls are easy to make, light and fluffy, and perfect for weeknight dinners or holiday meals!

Making Ahead

If you want to prep these ahead of time, make them up to the point of putting on the sauce. Hold off on making the sauce until right before they are going to go in the oven. Be sure to store the sliders, covered, and in the refrigerator if you make them in advance.

FAQ

How many does this serve?

If you use a package of 24 slider rolls, and you are serving this at a party with lots of other food and side dishes, I would count on 1 to 2 sliders per person. If this is dinner for your family, you might want to bank on 3 sliders per person.

How do you keep sliders from getting soggy?

It is all in the way you bake it. Covering with foil for part of the baking time keeps them from burning, but removing the foil for the last portion of baking is what keeps them from getting soggy.

If you are serving these for dinner with your family, here are a few sides that would pair very well with these. Since your oven will be occupied with the sliders, none of these require baking.

How long will these hold up? I would like to make them for a luncheon I am attending. We have a 10 am meeting so the sandwiches will not be served until noon. I would need to bring them already baked.

    • Lisa Longley says

They are, of course, best when they are fresh out of the oven. They will still be delicious but not as good. If it’s gong to be more than two hours from baking to serving, I would consider going with a different dish to pass. My chicken salad is amazing, and if you wanted a fun twist on it, you could make my curry chicken salad.

  2. Pat says

Thanks for your response. Someone is already making chicken salad.

  3. Beth walker says

If you already put the sauce on top of the sliders can you bake it and freeze them or can you freeze them without baking it

    • Lisa Longley says

I haven’t tried this, but I’ve had readers try it with success.

This was absolutely delicious! I used leftover black currant glazed ham sliced thin and followed the recipe. What a great recipe, especially for leftover ham. We gobbled these sliders up. Totally re-invented leftover ham. When I do this again, I’m gonna use sliced turkey plus the ham. Thank you so much. Yum.

I’m so glad you loved these!

This recipe is an excellent example of ruining a good recipe with too many additions. Forget the “sauce”, and enjoy the simple taste of a great little slider, at least leave the brown sugar out! I was very disappointed in this recipe.

    • Lisa Longley says

I’m so sorry this was a miss for you. Tastes definitely vary, but we love this one, and based on the other reviews we aren’t alone in that.

This is a delicious sandwich that I’ll definitely make again. I used Hawaiian rolls, Honeybaked Ham slices and provolone cheese. I baked them an extra 5 minutes uncovered to get a nice brown roll. So easy!

    • Lisa Longley says

I’m so glad you enjoyed these!

  7. Sherri says

If they’re not completely eaten will leftovers be ok or should I just do half and maybe bake the rest later

    • Lisa Longley says

Leftovers of this are definitely tricky. I just advised another reader to wrap them in foil and then pop them in the oven to reheat. They will be good, just not as good as the firs time.

  8. Whitney Johnson says

Absolutely AMAZING!!! How can I reheat without making the bread hard?? Any ideas?? Thank you so much in advance!

    • Lisa Longley says

I’m so glad that you enjoyed these. I do think these are tricky to reheat. I would suggest wrapping them in foil and popping them in the oven. I would avoid the microwave.

  9. Dzifa says

What type of ham should I use? I want to try this for my daughter’s birthday next weekend. 🤗

    • Lisa Longley says

I use deli ham. You could use a honey deli ham, that would be delicious in this.

  10. Debbie says

Haven’t tried it and it sounds amazing! I don’t have all the ingredients so I’m going to fake my way the it! Wish me luck!
