These milkshakes are only two ingredients and there are so many different directions you can take them. You will adore this simple but delicious recipe.
Milkshake Ingredients
Just two ingredients are needed to make this vanilla milkshake recipe. Be sure to see the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full recipe including all measurements so your milkshake is the perfect ratio and consistency.
- Ice cream: Use high-quality ice cream for the best flavor. Vanilla is a classic choice, but feel free to experiment with different flavors like chocolate, strawberry, or even cookies and cream.
- Milk: Whatever milk you have on hand will work to make a milkshake. Whole milk adds richness and creaminess to your milkshake. You can also use half-and-half or heavy cream for an even richer shake.

Strawberry Milkshake
We tested doing the strawberry milkshake version two different ways. First, we made it with strawberry ice cream following the recipe in the recipe card. Then we made it with vanilla ice cream and half a cup of diced strawberries. In a blind taste test, the fresh strawberry version was the hands-down winner. It was both sweeter and had a better strawberry flavor.
- 1/2 cup diced strawberries
- 2 cups vanilla ice cream
- 1/2 cup milk
- Combine all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.
Chocolate Milkshake Recipe
Just as with the strawberry milkshake, we loved the taste of it made with chocolate ice cream. But it was missing that extra chocolate punch. A little added fudge sauce was the perfect trick.
- 2 tablespoons fudge sauce
- 2 cups chocolate ice cream
- 1/2 cup milk
- Combine all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.
Other Flavor Ideas
Here are some other ideas for how to flavor your milkshakes!
- A few drops of almond, mint, or vanilla extract can enhance the flavor of your milkshake.
- Hot fudge, caramel sauce, peanut butter, or fruit syrups for added flavor.
- Crushed cookies, Oreos, candy bars, chocolate chips, or brownie bits make delicious mix-ins for extra texture and flavor.
- Add in some frozen fruit. Peaches, pineapple, mango, and blueberries will add some great flavor.
How to Serve
Top your milkshake with whipped cream, sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or a cherry for a classic look. Serve with a straw or spoon (or both) for eating. Milkshakes are best enjoyed immediately after making. If you need to store one, keep it in the freezer and re-blend before serving to restore the creamy texture.
